Four research principles, one connected design.

No single technique carries the whole experience. Wordy Birdy combines retrieval, spacing, repeated context, and useful multimedia support, then stays explicit about what the research does and does not prove.

Retrieval strengthens later recall

Trying to bring a meaning back to mind can be more valuable than simply seeing it again.

That is why practice cards ask for an answer. Recognition, typed responses, and spoken responses vary the cue while keeping the target word at the center.

What we do not assume

Retrieval is not the same as high-stakes testing. Feedback matters, and difficulty should stay productive rather than discouraging.

Spacing beats cramming for durable memory

A large quantitative review found a robust benefit when learning events are distributed rather than massed together.

Words need repeated, informative encounters

In a controlled L2 study, gains increased as learners met unfamiliar words more often in context; different parts of word knowledge developed at different rates.

A target word can move from a definition card into a story and later into practice instead of living in a single isolated flashcard.

What we do not assume

One encounter is rarely mastery, and “ten repetitions” is not a universal finish line. The value of an encounter depends on attention, context, and the kind of knowledge being measured.

Multiple modes can help—when they clarify

A meta-analysis of L2 glossing found benefits from adding another mode, such as a picture or audio, but effects varied with learners, materials, and test design.

Word cards can combine a written meaning, image, and pronunciation. In stories, translations are available on demand so support does not overwhelm the sentence.

What we do not assume

More media is not automatically better. Images and audio should explain the word, not compete for attention.
